Five Beer Events to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

First of all, let’s clear up the purpose of celebrating Cinco De Mayo here in the United States. It is not to commemorate Mexico’s independence from Spain, that occurs on September 16th each year. Instead, May 5th commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in the battle of Puebla where Mexico was greatly outnumbered. Today it has become a celebration of Mexican heritage, highlighting a vibrant culture, as well as an excuse to binge on Mexican food and tequila. Personally, I’m a beer drinker, so here are my top picks of where to get great beer and still break out your sombrero.

Burro’s Breakfast Release Party | Pinthouse Pizza | All day
Every year PHP releases their version of a crisp Mexican Lager coming in at 6% ABV. This year they will be featuring a Taco Deli collab pizza, the taco-inspired “Los Amigos” pizza.

Better Half Grand Opening | 6pm
Go visit the newest venture from the team behind Wright Brothers Brew and Brew, Better Half Coffee and Cocktails is an all-day cafe officially open to the public. They have conveniently scheduled their Grand Opening party after the Austin Beerworks Anniversary celebration and will feature vinyl tunes, cheaper-Than-They-Should-Be Draft Margaritas and Mint Juleps, craft beer and BBQ.

Mexican Crawfish Boil | Black Star Co-op | 12pm
Black Star is releasing a special collaboration brew with Zilker Brewing Company, (think tequila, salt and lime, but beer), and will be serving up some Mexican spiced craydaddies, served with a side of Mexican street corn.

Cinco De May at Uncle Billy’s | All day
Attend this all day celebration at Uncle Billy’s and grab a $4 pint of their special release Tranquilo Mexican-Style Lager and check out their special food menu while enjoying some tunes on the patio.

Austin Beerworks’ Lucky 7th Anniversary | 12pm
OK, so not technically a Cinco de Mayo celebration, this is still one of the best brewery anniversary parties in town. Grab your ticket and enjoy live music, delicious food and limited release brews including Rocket Surgery Anniversary IPA, Brain Science Anniversary IPL and La Verdad, a Mexican-style Lager.

Like most people, my love for craft beer started after college (once I could afford it!) and escalated quickly. I love being a part of the Austin beer culture and am always expanding my brew knowledge. I work in a high tech company here in town and love spending time with my kiddo, devouring a book and watching all things SciFi. Follow Me on Twitter @PamCraftBeerATX
